 introduction to fine art

At SBAD, we believe young children have the advantage when it comes to art. They respond with absolute honesty and have no preconceptions about what things “should” look like. That’s why so many artists including Matisse, Miro, Klee and Picasso looked to children’s art for inspiration.

We embrace this innocence, encouraging children to try different things and find their own way, helping to build confidence and independence. All while having fun!

In illustration 1 we focus on creating full illustrations in different mediums. This class uses student’s individual imaginations and styles to bring their own characters to life, whether they be human, animal, or something else all together! Rather than teaching students how to draw in one way, they will be building on their own personal styles to create their own unique way of drawing!

 Fun-damentals of painting

Contemporary Painting Workshops at the South Bay Art Department embrace the notion of exploration and experimentation, encouraging a risk-taking attitude. We do not focus on the accuracy of the representation, but rather we strive to elicit a powerful expression.

All painting students work with water-based mediums — exploring the visual challenges of color, scale and space. And in an effort to break away from preconceptions, the tools and materials we use are often varied and experimental.

Interspersed throughout painting studio experiences are references to historical and contemporary issues. Whether working with still life or figuration, these encounters with paint will help build a sense of confidence and accomplishment.
